# Promyslet Havla LIVE with Lenka Karfíková at Prague Castle: Democracy and the Future of Europe

In cooperation with ČR Vltava, a series of three live debates will take place at Prague Castle during the autumn, following on from the podcast Promyslet Havla.

The first live debate on 22 October will also be the final debate of the radio series, and the invitation to it has been accepted by **Lenka Karfíková,** Alice Koubová and Tomáš Koblížek, moderated by Karolína Koubová. The topic is **Democracy and the Future of Europe.**

In his essay *Evropa jako úkol* Václav Havel states that Europe's future depends on two fundamental values: on the diversity of attitudes, lifestyles and opinions, and on the ability to reflect on one's own mistakes. He points out that freedom in a democracy makes it possible to redress injustices, restore solidarity and think through a new future, but also to defend the plundering of the planet, the cult of consumerism and the loss of values in many vitally important areas. Václav Havel appealed to democrats to take care to strengthen the democratic structure of Europe. He recalled the ever-present reversibility of European history. *"The demons that have so disastrously marked European history to date – and worst of all in the twentieth century! – are waiting for their moment. To forget about them for the sake of some funds, quotas and tariffs would be a tragic mistake."* 

Where do Europe and the Czech Republic stand in the light of these words? What can we do to ensure that the Czech Republic remains a democracy? 

The other two discussions will be hosted by Alice Koubová, who will each time be in conversation with two guests. **The invitations to these debates have been accepted by Milena Bartlová, Jan Černý, Petr Kratochvíl and Sabrina Muchová.**
