Alice Koubová will speak in the block on the topic of Resilience; she will discuss scholarly research into the multi-systemic conception of resilience and the findings of research relating to Ukrainian and Czech society in response to Russian war aggression against Ukraine.

 Premises of the debate

Russian aggression against Ukraine has shown that defending a free society is not solely the task of the army and security institutions. At the moment of genuine threat, what also matters is a society's ability to hold together, to trust its own institutions, to find its bearings amid informational chaos and to assume personal responsibility for defending the values on which a democratic state rests. How do ordinary citizens become people willing to actively defend their country? What role is played in this by historical experience, trust, social cohesion and civic organisations? Personal experience of Russian aggression, unlawful imprisonment in Donetsk and the subsequent defence of Ukraine will be brought by the Ukrainian writer and journalist Stanislav Aseyev.

Discussion topics

● What makes people willing, in a crisis situation, to take responsibility for their country and its freedom?

● The Ukrainian experience: What does the war in Ukraine show us about genuine social resilience, and what from this experience can be transferred to the Czech context?

● The state, citizens and civil society: How should security institutions, the public and non-profit organisations cooperate in preparing for crisis situations?

● The inner strength of society: How can cohesion, morale and the willingness to act be maintained under long-term threat, and how can fatigue and resignation be prevented?
